The seventh storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, Tropical Storm Gabrielle is heading towards the East Coast; a tropical storm warning is in effect for North Carolina's shoreline Saturday. The National Hurricane Center’s forecast calls for Gabrielle to brush the Outer Banks Sunday afternoon. Maximum winds of 65 mph are expected. Gabrielle isn’t expected to become a hurricane but may bring much needed rain to the Carolinas, as much as 6 inches is expected on the coast. Saturday afternoon, Gabrielle’s maximum winds were 45 mph and the center 240 miles southeast of Cape Lookout, NC, moving northwest at 9 mph.
