Sony discontinues 20GB and 60GB PS3s in Japan
Sony said Thursday that it is discontinuing the sale of its PlayStation 3’s 20GB and 60GB versions in Japan. The company will “vigorously promote the expansion of the PS3 platform by further concentrating on the 40GB hard disk drive model.” The 40GB model, which sells for 39,980 yen ($365), helped the console gain market share, pushing Nintendo’s Wii off the top spot in Japan in November 2007. Sony said the discontinuation does not mean the 40GB PS3 will be the only model available in Japan as it plans to launch new models to respond to end-user preferences in the future.
