A ban on bird imports forced the cancellation of more than 100 cockfights in Puerto Rico. This US territory halted all bird imports Thursday after a rare outbreak of avian flu in nearby Dominican Republic, where authorities killed more than 100 chickens, including fighting roosters that tested positive for the lethal H5N2 virus. Puerto Rico’s cockfighting director Carlos Quinones says the cancellation of the fights may cost the industry millions of dollars in lost revenue. He says the matches were already organized, and people had already requested their visas and made hotel reservations. H5N2 is not a danger to humans.
