Although opposition candidate Raila Odinga claims President Mwai Kibaki cheated in the presidential elections, he accepted international mediation led by US Assistant Secretary of State for Africa Jendayi Frazer. On Monday, Odinga called off the nationwide strike set for Tuesday. His softened stand may have been influenced by the rising number of deaths in the violent clashes between demonstrators and police and supporters of the two presidential candidates. As of Monday evening, 486 Kenyans have died in violence caused by the disputed presidential election. Aside from the escalating death toll, some 250,000 Kenyans abandoned their homes because of the clashes.
