Brazilian authorities are investigating the theft of seven rare albino alligators from the Federal University zoo of Mato Grosso. The reptiles were discovered missing on New Year's Day, but there was no sign of a break-in. The result of 10 years of in-breeding, the birth of the alligators at the zoo was reported around the world in 2006. One albino alligator remains at the zoo and another two are at the Sao Paulo Aquarium. Authorities suspect animal smugglers stole the seven. Each is worth about $10,000. Brazil accounts for about 10 percent of the illegal animal trade around the world.
