U.S. District Judge James Selna has granted Broadcom's request for a permanent injunction against Qualcomm 3G, WCDMA cellular chips that infringe on certain Broadcom patents. Qualcomm was also barred from engaging in a range of marketing and customer support activities related to its WCDMA and EV-DO chips. Ina provision designed to minimize disruptions to U.S. cellphone carriers, Judge Selna allowed Qualcomm to keep selling the chips through January 2009 if it pays royalties to Broadcom. The provision also gives Qualcomm time to modify its products to stop infringing on Broadcom’s patents, the judge noted in a memorandum accompanying his order.
