Miami Metro Zoo spokesman Ron Magill said Sunday that 55-year-old Nonja, thought to be the world’s oldest Sumatran orangutan, has died. “Everybody's very sad, especially with an animal like an orangutan,” Magill said. “You see a lot of yourself in these animals. The great apes are our closest relatives.” Nonja, which means “girl” in Dutch, was born on the Indonesian island of Sumatra and came to Miami in October 1983. Necropsy results show Nonja suffered a brain hemorrhage that made her pass out and vomit, on which she choked to death. Sumatran orangutans typically have a lifespan of 40-50 years.
