Benazir Bhutto’s husband Asif Ali Zardari and 19-year-old son Bilawal were chosen by the Pakistan People’s Party Sunday to succeed the assassinated opposition leader. Bilawal, a student in Oxford, was named symbolic leader of Pakistan’s largest democratic party while Asif Ali, a former Cabinet minister who spent eight years in prison on corruption accusations, was officially designated co-chairman and would be the effective party leader. At the announcement, Bilawal said: “The long and historic struggle for democracy will continue with renewed vigor. My mother always said democracy was the best revenge.” The PPP also decided to contest the coming election.
