More than 50% of households now own digital televisions as the US moves closer to switching to all-digital broadcasting, the Consumer Electronic Association reveals. By federal mandate, broadcasters will have to distribute all content digitally in 2009. CEA projects TV manufacturers to ship nearly 32 million units in 2008, a 17% increase in unit sales and 13% revenue growth, with HDTVs accounting for 79%. “I am proud to announce our nation has hit this digital milestone. With 50% of U.S. homes able to experience the reality of digital television, we have crossed a critical threshold,” CEA president Gary Shapiro said.
