On Friday, the Washington State Department of Health issued a public warning that some recently purchased birds shipped by a national distributor have tested positive for avian chlamydiosis, bacteria that can be passed to humans when dust from droppings or urine are inhaled. The department says about 20 PetSmart stores in 11 counties in the state have received birds from the wholesaler and the pet chain has voluntarily removed all birds from the supplier. They are also currently treating exposed birds with antibiotics. No reports of people contracting psittacosis, the human form of the disease, have been filed so far.
