Just a few days before Christmas, a waitress at the Luby’s cafeteria in Brownsville, Texas learned that one of her most loyal but ill-tempered customers had left her $50,000 and a 2000 Buick when he died. Melina Salazar said that 89-year-old Walter “Buck” Swords had been her customer for nearly seven years. In an interview, she described how she thought Swords was “kind of mean” but she tried her best to smile through all his demands and curses. Swords was a World War II veteran who died in July. Referring to the inheritance, Salazar says “I still can’t believe it!”
