New home sales in the United States fell sharply in November to its lowest pace since April 1995 underscoring the enduring turmoil in the housing market. The Commerce Department reported on Friday that the sale of new homes dropped by 9% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 647,000. The pace of sales in April 1995 was 621,000. Economists had predicted sales in the weakest sector of the economy to drop by around 1.8%, to a pace of 715,000. New-home sales last month were down 34.4% from November 2006, the largest year-to-year decline since the 35.3% drop in January 1991.
