On Thursday, police and family members said that 17-year-old Carlos Sousa Jr., the boy who was mauled to death by a San Francisco Zoo tiger on Tuesday, was protecting his friend from the 350-pound animal before he died. The other victims, 19-year-old Paul Dhaliwal and 23-year-old Kulbir Dhaliwal, were at the San Francisco General Hospital reportedly with severe bite and claw wounds. On the same day, the zoo’s director, Manuel A. Mollinedo, confirmed officials’ revelations that the tiger’s escape may have been cause by walls that were well below the height recommended by the accrediting agency for the nation’s zoos.
